If used facedown, the teeth installed bite into the surface area of contact, reducing slipping and providing a great option for work in ice, mud, snow and similar environmental conditions. If used face-up, the teeth bite into cribbing/dunnage used to make the equipment level and reach the height needed (never higher than the base outrigger pad).
